Organic matter is the decomposed plant and animal material in soil. It helps soil hold water and nutrients, improves its structure so roots can grow, and feeds the soil life that makes nutrients available to plants. Heavy use of chemical fertilisers alone adds nutrients but not organic matter.
Ways to add organic matter
- Vermicompost and other composts, mixed into beds and pots.
- Organic manures such as cow dung manure.
- Crop residues and mulch.
